Photo: ahora.cuThe rehabilitation of Holguin’s aqueduct is a need rather than a will for both the population and the enterprises as for those who administer a resource that is scarce in several parts of the world.

It is not only about guaranteeing and receiving a stable and high-quality service, but also about saving and preserving water at all costs, for in the current conditions of deterioration of the conducts over 50 % of the pumped water gets lost, along with part of the energy used during this process.

The topic was also analyzed in a recent meeting of officials of Hydraulic Resources in the province with UPEC (Association of Cuban Journalists for its Spanish acronyms) and journalists from the different local media, in which an agreement was signed by both entities and the actions being carried out in the province were informed.

Guideline 281, related to hydraulic resource, comprises the priority and widening to be given to the rehabilitation program for networks, aqueducts and sewerage with the goal of minimizing the water loss in the middle term, reducing the energy consumption and increasing its recycling.

In Holguin there is a wide investment process in the hands of the Hydraulic Resources delegation. In the municipality of Cacocum, for instance, important actions, which provided the territory with a purifying plant, were carried out, and its networks were enlarged and rehabilitated.

Urbano Noris’s aqueduct is about to be reinstated, after two years of labor. 61 kilometers of networks and 2.8 kilometers of conductors were placed there, benefiting an entire town that depended on small systems, controlled by the central.

Next year, upgrading of systems is expected for the main towns of Baguano and Cueto, with integral projects comprising the construction of purifiers, conductors and the network installation.

The integral rehabilitation of the aqueduct in the city of Holguin is, with no doubt, the most important task. The conductor Cauto-Holguin, enabling the transfer of water from Cauto River to the Guirabo reservoir and Nipe-Gibara reservoir, is already working, also, with efficient pumping systems.

This project includes the installation of about 300 kilometers of new networks, a process concluded in eight neighborhood; the recovery of 52 kilometers of conductors, the purifying plant of Alcides Pino neighborhood and 10 pumping stations, apart from the construction of eight tanks with a capacity of 1800 cubic meters and a new plant for the treatment of 300 liters of water.

For the upcoming year the start of four tanks is expected: one in Alcides Pino’s purifier, another one at the end of Capitan Urbino neighborhood, and two in Holguin-2 purifier. Besides, 17 kilometers of conductors will be undertaken along with different actions in six sub-zones: La Quinta, 26 de Julio, Piedra Blanca, Capitan Urbino, Harlem-Santiesteban and Juan Jose Fornet-Ramon Quintana.

The total rehabilitation of the aqueduct is expected for a four-year period and includes the measurement of the state residential sector, as well as reaching a high sustainability degree in the operation and maintenance of the new system and the actions to increase conscience among the population on water use and consumption.
