Cuba’s Public Health Gives Priority to Sustainability and Efficiency

PINAR DEL RIO, Cuba, Jan 8 (acn) Cuba’s Public Health Minister Roberto Morales said on Saturday in Pinar del Rio that sustainability, high quality and efficiency are the priorities of this sector amidst the process of transformations currently underway in the island.
During a meeting with students and professors at the University of Medical Sciences in the westernmost province of Pinar del Rio, Morales said that some of the main goals for 2011 include improving public services and carrying out actions of hygiene, epidemiology and microbiology.
To consolidate the national strategy of training and research in order to increase the scientific level of professors and technicians, and to continue international cooperation are other objectives for 2011.
Morales noted that the results achieved in 2010 were better than those of the previous year and, as an example, he pointed out that Cuba closed the year with an infant mortality rate of 4.5 per every 1,000 live births.
After the meeting, the official visited several local public health facilities accompanied by Gladys Martinez Verdecia, first secretary of the Cuban Communist Party in Pinar del Rio.
