HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 8 (acn) The president of the Cuban Cycling Federation, Jose Pelaez, announced on Friday that the annual Vuelta a Cuba cycling tour will not take place this year.
Speaking in a press conference in Havana, Pelaez said the decision was made “as part of a necessary re-scheduling of the plan of national and international competitions and the implementation of a strategy to face upcoming events such as the Pan American Games of Guadalajara later this year and the Olympic Games of London in 2012.”
He added that this measure will allow them to use all the resources and efforts to fulfill the main goals of the Cuban sports movement in this period.
The Vuelta a Cuba had also been cancelled in 1970, 1975, 1982 and between 1991 and 1999.
In order to make up for this suspension, the Cuban cyclists will participate in several international events such as the Vuelta al Tachira in Venezuela, the San Luis Prize in Argentina, the World Cup in Manchester, the United Kingdom, and in the World Championship of Track Cycling in Apeldoorn, Holland.
