A French ship carrying the cable for a $63.4 million undersea fiberoptic link between Venezuela and Cuba is on the way to Venezuela, Granma reported.

The Île de Batz left the port of Calais Jan. 12 with 1,630 km of cable on board. The vessel, scheduled to begin laying the cable in Venezuela by Jan. 20, is equipped with cable-laying technology and an undersea robot.

Meanwhile, “conditions are being created” at Siboney beach near Santiago de Cuba for the cable landing during the first half of February, official Website Cubadebate said. Work includes construction of a communications center.

The project, initially planned to be completed last year, is carried out by a Chinese subsidiary of French concern Alcatel-Lucent. An additional link from Cuba to Jamaica will be laid in a later stage.

The ALBA-1 cable, which will be operated by a Venezuelan-Cuban state joint venture, will make a big difference in Internet connectivity of the island, Cuban officials say.
