Venezuelan flag carrier Conviasa will begin commercial flights on the Caracas-Havana route Feb. 22, the state airline announced.

Conviasa, which has been the main carrier of the Operación Milagro eye surgery program, will focus on foreign tourists visiting the island via Cuba.

“We have the responsibility to establish access ways that allow other nations to get to know the wealth and beauty of Venezuela,” said Jesús Viñas, president of Conviasa.

Plans by the member nations of the ALBA integration and trade agreement to create a joint airline have not materialized.
