The tourism ministry is designing new tourism products aiming at wealthier travelers.According to commercial director José Manuel Bisbé, the ministry is preparing a program aiming at Spanish tourists interested in the history of Spanish emigration to Cuba. The program will look at the routes of Catalonians, Asturians,Galicians, and migrants from the Canary Islands. Bisbé made the announcement during the International Tourism Fair in Madrid.
The ministry is also designing a program about the U.S.-Spanish war of 1898. Among others, participants will dive to shipwrecks from naval battles near Santiago de Cuba. Other programs in the making include a Hemingway tour that would bring participants to Havana and to Jardines del Rey, the setting of Hemingway’s last novel that was never published, and possibly one about the Maine, the U.S. battleship whose explosion in the Havana harbor triggered the U.S. intervention of 1898.
