HAVANA, Cuba, Jan 26 (acn) A fumigation campaign to fight the mosquito that transmits malaria began on Wednesday in the northern Angolan province of Uige with the participation of Cuban specialists as well as technicians of the Angolan Ministry of Health and other organizations.
Prensa Latina news agency reports that 6,770 people died of malaria in the first ten months of 2010 in Angola while in 2009 the number was 10,249.
It is the rainy season in Angola now and health authorities are insisting on the need to observe basic measures of hygiene and to eliminate puddles and garbage dumps in urban areas.
Cuba manufactures biological products that have proven very effective in the elimination of the Anopheles mosquito, the vector of malaria.
For this reason, the Economic Community of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) signed a letter of intention with Cuba in August 2009 to fight against this disease in its 16 member countries of this regional group.
Malaria kills thousands in Africa every year, mainly children and pregnant women.
