11:54, January 28, 2011. Vice President of Cuba's State Council Esteban Lazo met Thursday with Medardo Gonzalez, head of El Salvador's Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN), who was seeking stronger ties between the two nations which were only restored in 2009.

Salvadorean President Mauricio Funes, a FMLN leader, announced the restoration of the bilateral ties as he took office on June 1, 2009. The relationship had been suspended since 1961 after the Cuba revolution. The two nations reopened embassies in each other's capital last year.

During their meeting, Lazo and Gonzalez discussed issues related to the development and deepening of the "historical and brotherhood" ties between the two countries and between the FMLN and the Communist Party of Cuba, according to an official news release.

Other topics included preparations for the upcoming 6th Congress of the Communist Party of Cuba, the public debate on Cuba's economic reform plan, the situation in El Salvador and "the challenges of the two countries to face under the current international situation," it said.

The Salvadorean delegation also met with Cuban parliament leader Ricardo Alarcon.
