In a first-ever move for Cuba’s high-profile baseball, the Cuban Olympic Committee hired Japanese coaches to hold baseball workshops in Cuba, Prensa Latina reported.
The Japanese national team won the 2009 World Baseball Classic, the highest-profile international tournament. Cuba, winner of the 2006 Classic, was eliminated in second-round pool play.
Baseball is a matter of national pride in Cuba; the island has exported sports coaches throughout the world.
During 15 days in February, three Japanese coaches will teach their Cuban peers batting, pitching and strategy in two courses in Havana and Santiago.
In the courses, “we will be able to see the way they work, their perseverance in training, their self-control, the education they get, and the capacity of these athletes to focus,” Olympic Committee President José Ramón Fernández said during a press conference in Havana.
Fernández also said that other sports disciplines will get foreign support.
