UNICEF recognizes Cuba’s work in defense of children• LAS TUNAS.— "Cuba has demonstrated that responding to the needs of children does not require economic resources but political will. In spite of being a blockaded country with scant resources, it has developed a model for the implementation of children’s rights, with indicators that are among the highest in the world."

With these words, José Juan Ortiz, UNICEF representative in Cuba, expressed the appreciation of the UN organization for children’s programs developed by the Cuban state.

Talking with press representatives from Las Tunas province and the national media, José Juan Ortiz emphasized the priority that Cuba has given to children since January 1959, which has resulted in "fabulous work," above all in the areas of health (with infant mortality rates among the lowest of the world) and education (with all children enrolled in school), in addition to guaranteeing full access to children’s rights as constituted in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

On this issue, Ortiz noted the fact that, for Cubans, this Convention is also reflected in national legislation and is not merely an international legal instrument.
