Habanos S.A. said that its revenues grew 2 percent in 2010, amid a global recession. The company didn’t provide specific figures.
“We trust that this growth can be maintained in 2011,” said Co-President Jorge Luis Fernández Maique during the opening of this year’s Habanos Festival in Havana.
The same day, Fernández Maique was appointed as Cuban co-president of the British-Cuban joint venture that markets Cuban premium cigars worldwide. The 47-year old career manager replaces Oscar Basulto Torres, who will lead Grupo Empresarial Tabacuba, the Cuban state conglomerate that operates all tobacco-sector companies, including Habanos S.A.
Fernández, who has a degree in International Economic Relations, has worked in the tobacco sector for more than 20 years. His experience includes more than eight years as export director for tobacco leaf at Cubatabaco and six years as president of Coprova, the exclusive distributor of Habanos in France.
