HAVANA, Cuba, Feb 9 (acn) The participation of Cuban specialist Gustavo Kouri on Wednesday in the official presentation of the National Tropical Medicine Institute of Argentina (InMeT) was appreciated in that country.
The director of the "Pedro Kouri" Tropical Medicine Institute met in Buenos Aires with the Health Minister of that Andean nation, Juan Manzur, the www.cubaminrex.cu web site reported.
"The sole presence of Professor Kouri is an important support for the creation of this institute," expressed Manzur, who explained that the new institution will be located in the triple border area, in the city of Puerto Iguazu, in the province of Misiones.
Participants in the meeting agreed that it's necessary for the two institutions to work together in this field, and in that regard Kouri said: "we have already trained people from 88 countries in the five continents. This is the role we can play in this effort, providing training or advisory."
With regard to the situation of the so-called tropical diseases in the subcontinent, he pointed out that they're increasing, but clarified that some of these pathologies "are not, like they're called, tropical, but that they're linked to social and economic factors and to poverty."
He specified that although many of these ailments affecting the majority of the peoples are present in the region, Cuba has managed to eradicate a good amount of them and that they-re practically non-existent.
Kouri spoke about the control of tropical diseases during an international seminar held in the Argentinean capital prior to the presentation of the InMet,also on Wednesday.
