Pyongyang, February 23 (KCNA) -- A friendship gathering took place in Cuba on Feb. 12 to celebrate the birthday of General Secretary Kim Jong Il.

Present there were personages of the Cuban Committee for Supporting Korea's Reunification, the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples and an international camp and popular masses and the ambassador and officials of the DPRK embassy in Havana.

The first vice-chairman of the Committee for Supporting Korea's Reunification in his speech told about the brief history of Kim Jong Il's revolutionary activities and his undying leadership feats. Under his distinguished Songun leadership the DPRK secured tremendous military strength capable of resolutely beating back any aggression by the U.S. imperialists and their allied forces, the speaker said.

He referred to the DPRK's efforts for peace, security and reunification of the Korean Peninsula.

To reunify the peninsula is a vital issue that should be settled in an independent and peaceful way, he said, declaring that they would invariably support the Korean people in the struggle for independent and peaceful reunification of the country.
