Associated Press Will Weissert, Associated Press. EL PASO, Texas – A medical examiner from Cuba is telling a Texas jury how shrapnel from the 1997 bombing of a Havana hotel killed an Italian tourist.
Ileana Vizcaino Dime traveled from Havana to El Paso to testify in the trial of Luis Posada Carriles.
She described Thursday how Italian Fabio di Celmo died of blood loss after a bomb blew apart an ashtray, sending metal shards flying. The pieces severed his jugular.
That blast was one of a series of attacks on Cuban tourist sites that year.
Posada is not on trial for the bombings but for allegedly lying about planning them.
He's accused of lying under oath during immigration hearings and is charged with perjury, obstruction and immigration fraud charges.
