2011.03.03 - 09:17:05 / radiorebelde.HAVANA, CUBA.- The history and historiography of slavery in Africa was the focus of the lecture given on Wednesday in this capital by Doctor Ibrahima Thioub from the University of Dakar, Senegal.

The meeting between Thioub and intellectuals and scholars from seven nations took place at Havana’s Juan Marinello Cultural Research Institute.

Ibrahima based his lecture on the interpretation of the African peoples around slavery as a local and present phenomenon, since its practice is due to naturalization and socialization.

He emphasized that slavery is one of most universal historic phenomena that can be described and that it’s related to any color of the skin

The speaker expressed his satisfaction for his visit to Havana, a city that captivated him for its music since he was very young, and particularly to the Juan Marinello Institute, which favored the opportunity for this exchange with personalities from France, Germany and the United States, among other nations.

Thioub is a Doctor of History, a professor at the University of Dakar and a figure among the most outstanding scholars that have specialized on the issue of slavery.

Reynaldo Funes, of the meeting’s organizing committee, told ACN about the contributions made by the visit to Cuban culture, taking into account that slavery existed for several centuries in its territory, mainly at sugar and coffee plantations and for household chores.  (ACN)
