Monday, March 7, 2011. Art by Pablo Soto Campoamor. Just off I-580's Lakeshore exit is a little piece of Cuba.Four tables with chairs make up the outside seating area. Besides the sole table, which leans because of the slight slant in the floor, the inside is standing room only.
Latin rhythms play through the speakers. On the condiment bar, napkins rest in old Cuban Cigar boxes. And the shelf just above displays books about the island. The brick wall is decorated with original paintings from Pablo Soto Campoamor.
Cana, located at 530 Lake Park Ave., is quite the charming addition to the area.
Run by two California natives, Cana's tagline is "The Bay Area's Only authentic Cuban restaurant venue." Given the team's involvement in La Taza de Cafe and the delicious menu, they aren't bluffing.
The small walk-up where visitors can drop in and order from their choice of "cafe," "sweets," "empanadas," "bocadillos" or "originales," is just the cafe. Soon the parlor will open and feature a full bar, live music, a cigar list and music. As of now the menu includes Cafe Cubano (made with Blue Bottle Coffee), Flan de Coco, Panatela Barracha, Grilled Veggie empanadas. Cana is open 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and will open its doors for dinner hours by the end of March.
