TEGUCIGALPA – Twenty-two Cuban immigrants landed on a Caribbean beach in Honduras 10 days after leaving Cuba aboard a launch, the second group to arrive in the Central American country in little more than a month.

A spokesperson for the public prosecutor’s office in Tela told reporters that the Cubans landed Wednesday night and that the migrants are in good health, though hungry.

The Cubans numbering 19 men and three women were handed over to the migration office in Tela for registration, the source said.

“We left on Sunday the 6th (of March) and got here at 8:30 p.m. – our diesel ran out 4 1/2 days ago and we’ve been navigating under sail for those 4 1/2 days,” one of the Cubans, who did not give his name, told reporters.

“We’re asking Honduran authorities to help us with the process of getting our papers” to legalize their stay, he said.

On Feb. 14, another 15 Cuban immigrants came ashore in the municipality of Esparta, also in the Caribbean province of Atlantida.

In recent years the Caribbean coast of Honduras has become a key point of arrival for groups of Cuban immigrants leaving their country with hopes of reaching the United States. EFE
