2011.03.31 - 13:52:01 / radiorebelde.icrt.cu. Cuba Develops Own Technology for Bone Healing. HAVANA, CUBA.- Cuban researches from the Institute of Cybernetics, Mathematics and Physics, based in Havana, created a device for bone reparation called THERAMED 101-B, which showed positive results in 18 out of the 22 cases studied.

According to Juventud Rebelde newspaper, THERAMED 101-B is capable of solving broken bones problems that take a long time for healing or do not heal at all, by way of several 20-minute-long ultrasound sessions on the affected area.

The head of the project, Dr. Orlando R. Rodriguez Rua, affirmed that tests with this equipment at Havana’s Manuel Fajardo Orthopedic Hospital proved that it is possible to contribute to the healing process of bone fractures ––with 80-90 % effectiveness–– with this technology “developed in Cuba and within our reach.”

Rodriguez said that ultrasounds mechanically stimulate the fracture, without reducing the stability needed by the bones in these cases, and stimulate the healing process with the generation of new blood vessels around the affected area.

He noted that in the international market there is a similar device called EXOGEN 2000, registered by the United States, and Cuba does not have access to it.

Taking into account that the substitution of imports is a priority in Cuba, several THERAMED 101-B could be installed in different orthopedic centers in the country.

Rodriguez pointed out that building one THERAMED 101-B costs nearly 1,000 dollars, and with only one of them it is possible to treat lots of patients.   (ACN)
