Cuba: Biotechnology Essential in Cancer Treatments

2011.04.06 / radiorebelde.icrt.cu. Havana, Cuba.- Biotechnology products are essential in the treatment of cancer, the second cause of death in Cuba and the main obstacle for increasing life expectancy in the country, which is 80 years old.

The director of the Center of Molecular Immunology (CIM), Dr. Agustin Lage, affirmed in Havana that 40 % of biotechnological medicines in the world are applied in immunotherapy of malignant tumors, and have proven its effectiveness in the patients’ quality of life and life expectancy.  

During the Sixth International Symposium on Oncology, underway until Friday at Havana’s Center for Medical and Surgical Research (CIMEQ), Lage insisted on the need to promote biotechnology in Primary Health Care.

He noted that treatments must take into account advanced age and other common sufferings in these patients.

Cuba has registered products such as Interferon, Erythropoietin, monoclonal antibodies, and therapeutic vaccines; which have shown positive results against myeloid leukemia; melanomas; kidney, esophagus, and lung cancer; among others.  

The director of the center announced that it is developing four monoclonal antibodies, eight therapeutic vaccines, and three polypeptides for treating cancer and other diseases.

He pointed out that biological products are gaining prominence in the therapeutic treatment of cancer, and its incidence rises rapidly after 65 years old.

Annually, more than 20,000 Cubans die for this disease; and that’s the reason why experts insist on prevention, taking into account that 40 % of the cases are caused by smoking, alcoholism, lack of physical exercises, and inadequate feeding habits.

Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial aspects to fight this disease, which not only causes a lot of suffering in patients and relatives but also brings about colossal expenditures to the government.(ACN)
