In an effort to recover exportable products in Cuba, the Provincial Citrus Enterprise of Ciego de Avila expands the export of top-quality charcoal to Europe.
Exports of the Cuban charcoal, made from marabou bush, are expected to peak 20,000 tons, the highest volume sold by the enterprise since it started to commercialize the product five years ago, pointed the director of the entity, Nelson Paz Fernandez.
The enterprise contributed 3.2 million dollars to the Cuban economy last year, said Paz Fernandez and added that the increase in marabou charcoal rather than affecting the forest areas in the country is actually beneficial as it contributed to the elimination of the fast-growing bushing lands to be used for agriculture.
The Cuban charcoal is exported to all Europe with Italy, Spain, Greece, France, Germany and Portugal having the highest demand.
