Cuba: Int'l Golf Tournaments Began on Sunday in Varadero

More than 65 foreign players are participating in the Montecristo Golf Cup and the Esencia 2011 Cup that began on Sunday and will run through Saturday, April 23rd, in the Cuban seaside resort of Varadero, in the western province of Matanzas, a little over 140 kilometers east of Havana.
Varadero Golf Club is the largest golf field in Cuba.
According to Milagro Diaz, an executive at the Varadero Golf Club, both tournaments are sponsored by the Palmares S.A. and the Esencia S.A. corporations.
Varadero will also host the First Ana Gabriela Guevara Tournament on October 13-17 with the participation of the Mexican former athletics Olympic star after whom the event has been named.
Today, Cuba has two golf courses, Capdevila, in the capital, and the Varadero Golf Club "the most important one with 18 holes in a 69-hectare area. However, in order to boost this tourist modality, 27 golf facilities will be built over the next 15 years.
New golf courses will be located in the provinces of Pinar del Rio, Artemisa, Havana, and Matanzas-Varadero in the western region, as well as in the northern cays of the central province of Ciego de Avila, the eastern province of Holguin and the central-southern region of Cienfuegos and Trinidad. Golf will return to the Olympic program in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 after 112 years of absence.
