Agence France-Presse April 26, 2011. Cuba's only trade union called Monday for a massive May 1 parade supporting President Raul Castro's raft of economic reforms approved by the Communist party this month.
"This will be the best chance for Cuban workers, with their massive, radical and revolutionary participation, to express their endorsement of the adopted resolutions," the Workers' Central Union of Cuba was quoted as saying in the official daily Granma.
Under the more than 300 reforms, which include some free-market measures, Cubans can buy and sell homes and cars for the first time in 50 years.
The measures aim at keeping the centrally planned system from collapsing, but stop short of embracing a market-led economy.
They included opening the private sector, trimming a million state jobs in the coming years and reducing state spending.
Many reforms have already begun.More than 1,000 labour leaders and representatives of social movements and groups from 48 countries confirmed they would attend the Labor Day parade, according to Granma. The Vancouver Sun
