UN Highlights Cuba's Help to Chernobyl Victims

By: leana Ferrer Fonte .United Nations, Apr 26 (Prensa Latina) More than 25,000 people, including 21,340 children, have benefited from the Cuban humanitarian program for victims of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, the United Nations reported Tuesday.

The information is included in a letter addressed to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon by Cuba's permanent mission to the UN on the 25th anniversary of that tragedy.

The letter is signed by Rodolfo Benitez, Cuban charge d'affaires, who requested that it be circulated as an official UN document.

The text notes the persistent effects of what happened to citizens' life and health, particularly among children, in the affected zones in Ukraine, Belarus, the Russian Federation and other countries.

Right away, a comprehensive health program was implemented in Cuba, on a mass scale and free of charge, to treat children affected by the Chernobyl accident, the letter states.
