Caracas appointed a former education minister as ambassador in Havana, according to Venezuelan news agency AVN.

Edgardo Ramírez, a professor of international politics at Universidad Central de Venezuela, was education minister from February 2010 to January 2011.

His predecessors in Havana have included a brother of President Hugo Chávez and a former oil and energy minister.

Thanks to a more than decade-old oil-for-services agreement, Venezuela is Cuba’s largest trade partner. Cuba and Venezuela signed 284 cooperation agreements last year.
