2011.05.13 - 17:44:00 / radiorebelde.icrt.cu. Havana, Cuba.- The 11th Havana Biennial was announced this Friday by the director of the Wilfredo Lam Center of Contemporary Art, Jorge Fernandez who said the event will take place from May 17 to June 7 of 2012.
Fernandez told ACN the Biennial will be focused on artistic practices and social imaginary. It will seek to strengthen the social character of the event by going deeper in the thinking of people in different communities.
According to Fernandez, the purpose of the Biennial is for young people to identify with the activities of the event so that it becomes a big mirror for the Cuban society.
Organized by the Wifredo Lam Center of Contemporary Art, the Havana Biennial was first held in 1984 before the international boom of similar events took place in the mid of 1990s.
The first edition was dedicated to Latin American artists, those who either live in the region or have Latin American cultural roots. As of the second Biennial, its approach was broadened to include artists from Africa and Asia, thus turning Havana into the most important meeting space for “non-western” art. (ACN)
