Bean Harvest in Holguin Key to Reduce Imports

The 4.133,6 tons of beans produced in the Cuban province of Holguin, over 900 above planned, is a step forward in the country's zeal of reducing imports. According to local sources, until yesterday some 2.981,6 tons of beans had been gathered, what represents 73% of the total production. Among them, 2.294,6 that are used for import substitution, of vital importance in the territory, since that concept saves over 1.200.000 dollars to the country.

The municipalities with the best results were Refael Freyre and Gibara. The former surpassed the plan up to a 132%, whereas the latter delivered 1.210,5 tons, a record number in the territory. The companies with outstanding performances were: Agricultural Reinerio Almaguer (Rafael Freyre), Agricultural-industrial of Citrics of Banes and “Angel Guerra”, of the production area Yuraguana, in Holguin.

During the cold-weather harvest, 6.382,6 hectares were planted in Holguin, 490 more than in the previous year. 200 hectares will be planted in September, and the results will be delivered in December.

For the 2011-2012 harvest, 5.400 hectares are expected to be destined to import substitution, and they will count on inputs and technological materials. Producers expressed their satisfaction for the formality and the seriousness of this campaign as well as for the adequacy of the prices since its beginning.

The Provincial Bean Workshop will be developed on May 25 in Gibara, which will assess the obtained results, the deficiencies and the strategy for the upcoming campaign. Representatives of all the companies that produced beans will participate, as well as the best producers of the province and specialists of the National Institute of Grains, who will deliver several subjects with new varieties of products and harvest technologies.
