2011.05.28 - 13:52:05 / radiorebelde.icrt.cu. Havana, Cuba.- Cuban and Uruguayan centers dedicated to the development of health biotechnology in the two nations signed various agreements to strengthen bilateral cooperation in this field.

The accords were signed by the Center of Molecular Immunology and the Institute of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, of Cuba, with the University of the Republic, and the Pasteur and Clemente Estable institutes, of Uruguay.

According to Prensa Latina news agency, the Uruguayan minister of Education and Culture, Ricardo Ehrlich, said that medicines produced in the aforementioned two Cuban centers are already used in his country.

They are products used to treat tumors and many other complex diseases, particularly among patients suffering from diabetes.

Ehrlich is in Havana heading a delegation from the South American country to participate in a week-long festival dedicated to the Uruguayan culture until June 4.

Cuba’s advances in the field of health biotechnology have been extolled by renowned specialists such as Renato Garcia, the president of the Regional Council for Latin America of Biomedical Engineering.

While attending the Fifth Latin American Conference on Biomedical Engineering held last month in Havana, the Brazilian expert said Cuba’s experiences in the field are worth to be extended to other nations.
