The search for new rice varieties with a high level of agricultural and industrial production is one of the main strategic goals of the Grain Research Institute (IIGranos), according to a report from that center of the Ministry of Agriculture.

Increasing and preserving genetic variability and creating, adapting, and establishing technologies that allow the sustainable development of the national production of the cereal are also among the purposes of that institute.

The goals include establishing a system to guarantee the quality of the grain crops, generate technologies, and offer technical-scientific services of high economic impact.

The report highlights some of the results of the research center in the implementation of the rice genetic improvement program, among them the nomination of 50 rice varieties.

The institution has as a main mission the integral development of rice and other grains, in order to provide food for humans and animals.

The study of the genetic base of a group of varieties and the preservation of over 2500 accessions in the germ-plasma bank is also among its achievements.
