2011.06.07 - 13:18:29 / radiorebelde.icrt.cu. SANTIAGO DE CUBA.- Heavy rains, associated to the low pressure area in the Caribbean Sea, have been reported in this eastern Cuban province in the last 24 hours.
Water Resource Institute deputy representative in this province Omar Palacios said that the highest readings were in the municipality of Palma Soriano, with 287.2 millimeters, Sigua in Baconao with 240 and the Jose Marti urban center with 152. In other areas the equipments registered over 100 millimeter precipitations.
The head of the Weather Forecast in the territory Gerardo Nápoles described these rains as intense, but beneficial to the territory in which water levels were depressed due to the draught.
Many wells will be reactivated after a period where they got dried since rains had been scarce in the first six months of 2011.
Due to the mountain topography of the region, many rural communities were severely affected by the draught that forced the government to start a pipe truck service to take water to them.
The latest rains have favored crops and water reservoirs, though the last ones were not in a critical situation prior to this event, with water stored to 76 percent of their full capacity.
This figure is expected to grow thanks to the drain-off from the mountains.
