Contestants from Argentina and Cuba aboard the Marina Bella boat are leading the 61st Ernest Hemingway International Marlin Fishing underway off Havana’s coasts with 1,050 points scored so far.
The team which fished the first marlin of the event on Tuesday has captured two Blue Marlins and one White Marlin.
In the second place is DE-Bait able, from the U.S., with 1,000 points having fished three Sailfishes.
The Tag and Release boat from Ecuador, and Doris, from Cuba are the next in the list both with 350 points after capturing one Blue Marlin and one Sailfish, respectively, according to a report by the organizers of the event.
Another highlight for Wednesday was marked by the crew aboard DC9-I from Italy and Canada, who hooked a 52.5 pound Wahoo, a species that though doesn’t provide points did caught the attention of the fishermen.
The biggest Dorado captured so far, weighting 22 pounds, was that hooked by the fishermen aboard Alba Solar II, from Mexico.
Members of the Hemingway International Nautical Clug and of the Marlin Nauticas y Marinas business group from Cuba, hosting the event together with the Cuban Ministry of Tourism, recognized the participants’ efforts, who have kept their spirits high in spite of the bad weather.
The International Marlin Fishing Tournament in honor of the famous American writer was first held on May 26 of 1950. It is one of the first events of its type ever held in the world.
