2011.06.10 - 18:24:29 / radiorebelde.icrt.cu. Havana, Cuba.- According to a press release by the Cuban Meteorology Institute issued on Friday at noon, heavy rains have been reported over the last 24 hours from Matanzas to Camagüey, and in Granma in the east of the island.

The heavy rains are associated to the presence of an extensive low-pressure zone spanning from the Bahamas to the Central Caribbean Sea.

The most significant rainfall has been reported in Matanzas with 112.8 mm;  the municipality of Caibarien in Villa Clara (138 mm); Fomento, Sancti Spíritus (178.3 mm); Guaimaro, Camaguey (117.4 mm); and Jiguani, Granma (106.2 mm).

On related news, the biggest reservoir in the eastern province of Santiago de Cuba is releasing, while the total capacity of the region is filled to 93.36% according to Omar Palacios, with the Water Resources Office in the province.

The Meteorology Institute forecast says rains will continue in most part of the country and they can be heavy in certain areas of the central and eastern region of Cuba, particularly in the mountains.
