Havana, Cuba.- Higinio Vélez, president of the Cuban Baseball Federation, announced the designation of Alfonso Urquiola as director of the Cuban national baseball squad in a meeting held at Havana´s Latino Americano Stadium on Tuesday.
As it is known, Urquiola, the overall champion manager of the Cuban National Series, is training a first team of candidates in Ciego de Ávila province to be part of the official line-up squad that will be representing Cuba at the World Baseball Challenge tournament to be held in Canada.
Vélez also announced that a 6-game series will be held July 1-6 at the Latinoamericano stadium with the participation of these athletes and those who are training to take part in the ALBA Games, which is set for July in Venezuela.
The preparation games here in Havana, to be broadcast on Cuban radio and television, will begin at 8:00 p.m. (local time), except for the games on Saturday, July 2, and Sunday, July 3, which will begin at 4:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m., respectively.
It was also informed that the Liga de Desarrollo will begin on August 13 and the 51st National Series will start on Sunday, November 27. As of this year, the National Baseball Series will begin the last Sunday of November.
