HAVANA July 8, 2011 (AP) The Cuban government says about 16 percent of islanders are online in some capacity.

A new report from the National Statistics Office says nearly 1.8 million of Cuba's 11.2 million residents are using some kind of "Internet service," defined as email, the island's Intranet or the Web.

That's a nearly 12 percent increase from 1.6 million the previous year.

The report shows a generally steady increase since 2005.

Cuba has no functioning fiber-optic connection to the rest of the world, and a report from Akamai Technologies Inc. says the island has the second-worst connectivity rates on the planet.
