The proper use of the soil is a main goal in the environmental land management study to be undertaken at Zaza dam’s hydrographic basin, considered Cuba’s second most important and where over half the population of Sancti Spiritus lives.

Since the hydrographic basin area was expanded -it now represents the 37% of the province’s surface area- the study includes six municipalities from Sancti Spiritus and two (Remedios and Placetas) from the nearby province of Villa Clara.

The basin’s forested area is low (only 8%), that’s why reforestation actions are top priority in the study. The
investigation will also take into account the already-made studies on the risks of floods and damages due to the impact of strong winds.
