Australia is looking to establish stronger development ties with Cuba, anAustralian government official says.
Parliamentary Secretary for Pacific Island Affairs Richard Marles is visiting Cuba this week to hold meetings about Cuba's ties to development in the Pacific.
Doctors from several Pacific island nations are currently receiving medical training in Cuba.
Mr Marles told Pacific Beat Australia was keen to develop "non-traditional partnerships" with Cuba.
"We are keen to talk about ways in which we can cooperate with Cuba and its work in the Pacific, particularly in relation to health," he said.
"One of the organising principles I always think about the Pacific is - the more the merrier."
