Farmers in the Cuban municipality of Banes are proud of having started rice production on their own account. Photo: Alcibiades Leyva Lagares Rice production is one of the actions undertaken in the municipality of Banes, in the Cuban province of Holguin, to reduce exports for the sake of the country’s economy, mostly today when food prices tend to rise everyday.
Banes is committed to increasing rice production until meeting its full potentials, that is why, in the outskirts of the town of Los Pinos, some eight kilometers away from the jurisdiction's head town, rural workers stick to land toiling by using all resources at hand in order to produce that so highly welcomed cereal in Cuba.
The rice so far colleted might never compete in quantity with the world's largest producers, but that does not mean at all it is insignificant, for those men do not have sophisticated machines to do their job.
Nobody taught them how to face the task, they had to learn as they went on working, that is why, they today feel proud because their effort was not in vain, and the good thing is that nothing will stop them from dreaming and going for higher yields.
This way, rice growers in the district of Los Pinos, in the Municipality of Banes, make their modest contribution to reducing imports of this cereal that is sold at 550 dollars the ton in the world market. / Translated by Radio Angulo
