Fri Aug 26 2011. Winter flights to Cuba will resume at John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport starting this year. Flights will be introduced to Varadero in December, and flights to Holguin, Cuba will take off in February.
These flights, through Canadian tour operator Hola Sun Holidays, will run until April 2012.
“We had Cuba for the first time last year; they’ve switched up the destinations a little this year and have gone with Holguin and Varadero,” said Karen Medweth, director of service development for the airport. “Those two destinations work a bit better with the family market around here.
“We’re really excited they’re back, and we look forward to developing that partnership and securing even more destinations.”
She said last year’s run was a success, and the flights were great for winter business. She said they exemplified the speed and convenience of the airport.
Another exciting move for the airport is upcoming twice-weekly WestJet flights to Las Vegas, Nev., beginning in September.
“Those ones are going to do, I think, very well. Half our office is using them already; I know I’ve booked myself one,” she laughed.
During the winter months, WestJet provides non-stop service to Cancun, Orlando and Punta Cana, plus service twice daily to Calgary. WestJet also provides daily non-stop summer service from Hamilton International Airport to five Canadian destinations: Moncton, Halifax, Winnipeg, Calgary and Edmonton.905-526-3494
