By David Owens, South Wales Echo. Aug 25 2011. This weekend one of South Wales’ finest new bands will be playing on the biggest of stages at the Reading and Leeds festivals. Cuba Cuba’s Morgan Isaac tells Dave Owens why he can hardly wait for the momentous day to arrive.
IT’S three days to the biggest gig of Morgan Isaac’s life and the adrenalin is already pumping.Despite the frontman of electro rockers Cuba Cuba being on the other end of a phoneline, his voice is a mixture of nerves and excitement No wonder given his band, who hail from Taffs Well and Church Village, near Pontypridd, have been chosen to play this
weekend’s decidedly huge Reading and Leeds festivals.
The outfit recently released their keenly anticipated debut album Where Else Is Safe But The Road? – a collection of songs that brims over with the sort of thrilling electro rock and pop anthems that has seen them compared to such lofty names as The Killers and Friendly Fires.
It’s that unstoppable pedigree that has also seen them picked to play the festival as part of BBC Introducing’s new band stage.
“You get put forward by your local station, which in our case was BBC Wales,” explains Morgan. “Those entries are then whittled down, and a panel of music industry people and the festival promoters choose the bands.”
Although the singer confesses he didn’t believe it when he heard they were being invited to play.
“I got an email through one of our old email accounts, and I thought it was some kind of joke,” he laughs.
“It’s been like a dream of ours to play there,” Morgan adds.
If that wasn’t good enough, their stage times at both festivals are equally as eye-opening.
“We’re on at Leeds on the Friday at 7.45pm,” says Morgan. “Which is a brilliant slot. We were handed the main support slot to the headliners which was another massive surprise to us.
“Then we’re on at 7.55pm on the Sunday at Reading. Both incredible slots.”
The thrill is made even greater by the fact the band have been regular Reading festival goers over the years.
“This sounds silly but when you look at the poster for Reading and Leeds our names are on there,” he said excitedly.
“I said to all the boys I’m really looking forward to buying the t-shirt which has all the line-up on it.”
