HAVANA, Cuba, Sept 12 (acn) Cuba's advances in the field of surgery will be presented during the Congress of the Iberian-Latin American Society of Surgeons (SILAC) to be held from September 15th through the 17th in Matanzas province.

Professor Lazaro Yera, president of the SILAC and of the event's organizing committee, announced during a press conference over the weekend that surgeries of the esophagus, duodenum, stomach, small intestine, liver, pancreas and biliary tract, in addition to oncological surgery, will be among topics tackled.

Dr. and Professor Nicolas Cruz explained that the forum also includes a round table on surgery of the elderly, and a symposium sponsored by the Pan-American Health Organization (PAHO) on the safety of patients undergoing surgery.

The conference, to take place at the Kawama Hotel of Varadero beach, is dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the SILAC and to late eminent Cuban surgeon Alejandro Garcia, and will be attended by some 250 delegates from several nations.

Professors Alfredo Vicencio, Mexican academician and vice-president of the SILAC; Jose Antonio Rodriguez, from Spain; and Heriberto Rodriguez, from the Dominican Republic, will be among the personalities participating in the
meeting.

Over 600 Cuban physicians and 400 from Latin America, Spain and Portugal make up the SILAC, founded in 1986, stated Yera.
