Havana, (AIN).- The announcement for the XI Havana Biennale, which will take place from May 17 to June 7, 2012, was presented by Jorge Fernández, director of the Wifredo Lam Contemporary Art Center, in this capital.

In declarations made to AIN, Fernández highlighted that this cultural event distinguished in the Cuba Pavillion in the programm for the 25th anniversary of the Hermanos Saíz Association, according to the generational influence of previous encounters, as a space to made young art public.

He informed that the theme of the biennale will be the artistic practices and the social imagination. It will boost the social vocation of this visual arts forum of the so called Third World and it will go deep into what the inhabitants think, in their respective communities.

He also cited the intention of the young people to be identified with everything that has been scheduled in the event and this may result a big mirror for Cuban society.

Organized by the Wifredo Lam Contemporary Art Center, the Havana Biennale was establiched in 1984, much earlier that the international boom of similar spaces, by the mid 1990´s.

The first edition was dedicated to Latin American artists who live or have their cultural roots there. From the second version, the emphasis was increased to include creators from Africa and Asia and to turn Havana into the most important convergence point of non-western art.
