2011.09.20 - 14:56:46 / radiorebelde.icrt.cu.HAVANA, Cuba.- Cuba permanently canceled the import of gases that are regarded as ozone depleting substances, a spokesperson of the Ministry of Science, Technology and the Environment (CITMA) announced this week.
Aray Rodriguez Dominguez, an ozone specialist with the Environment unit of CITMA, said that the import of chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), carbon tetrachloride, and methyl bromide, has been permanently cancelled and plans are under way to eliminate the use of hydro-chlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) by 2030.
“This decision opens the door to the use of environment-friendly alternatives,” she noted.
In a recent interview, the director of CITMA’s Technical Office of Ozone, Nelson Espinosa, said that Cuba is working hard for the protection of the ozone layer. In this respect, he noted, Cuba implemented —since 1993— a National Program for the Elimination of Ozone Depleting Substances.(ACN)
