SANCTI SPIRITUS, Cuba.-The International Event of Nature and Tourism, acronym Tournat witnessed a record figure of 234 participants, mostly from 13 nations. The event has really been an opportunity to show the large potential of nature as a tourist product in the central region of the Cuban archipelago.

The Cuban vice minister of tourism, Xiomara Martinez Iglesias, spoke of the importance of promoting the main values and natural attractions of Cuba so as to increase the number of tourists visiting the island for doing nature tourism. 

On Thursday, Martinez closed the 28th International Meeting on Nature Tourism (Turnat 2011) at the San Jose del Lago Village, in the municipality of Yaguajay, in the central province of Sancti Spiritus. 

She noted that this event, with a record figure of 234 participants, mostly from 13 nations, was an opportunity to show the large potential of nature as a tourist product in the central region of the Cuban archipelago. 

The vice president of tourism said that she was confident in that specialized journalists and tour-operators from France, Canada, Italy, Mexico, Spain, the U.S., Germany, the United Kingdom, Panama, the Dominican Republic and Switzerland, will share the experiences from the event back in their countries. 

During the closing ceremony, the general director of the travel agency Ecotur, Zady Abud Morejon, announced that the next meeting will take place in the eastern province of Granma, which treasures the main mountain range in Cuba, called Sierra Maestra.  

Abud explained that Granma also holds the Desembarco del Granma National Park, which was declared World Heritage Site by UNESCO; and the Turquino National Park; and both show high levels of endemism, biodiversity, and preservation.(ACN)
