2011.10.04. radiorebelde.icrt.cu. Cuban grand master Lazaro Bruzon was one of the two chess players defeated in the first day of the Karpov Memorail underway in the Russian city of Poikovsky. This Karpov Memorial is a FIDE XIX category, and it will be played with round robin system.

Bruzon (ELO 2,686) played with black pieces against Czech Viktor Laznicka (2,701) and lost after 43 moves of a Catalan Opening, according to www.chessdom.com.

Specialists said that the five-time Cuban champion had a small advantage in the middle of the game, when he dominated the queen tower column, but they consider he used a mistaken strategy from then on, apparently due to lack of time.

Also playing with blacks, Russian Dmitry Jakovenko was defeated by Italian Fabiano Caruana in 46 moves of a Spanish Opening.

Meanwhile three games were drawn: the favourite Russian Sergey Karjakin (2,772) against defending champion US Alexander Onischuk (2,669); Russian Sergey Rublevsky (2,681) and Ukrainian Zahar Efimenko (2,703); and French Etienne Bracot (2,705) and Russian Alexander Motylev (2,690).

This Karpov Memorial is a FIDE XIX category, and it will be played with round robin system.(ACN)
