Celebrating its 50th anniversary the Experimental Station of Pastures and Forages Indio Hatuey in the province of Matanzas has played an important role in the sustainable development of agriculture in Cuba.

Ascribed to the Camilo Cienfuegos University, this institution was the first scientific center of the agricultural branch emerged after the triumph of the Revolution, and opened on March 8th.

The introduction, conservation and development of pastures for feeding the cattle population was the main objective of this entity, which shows among their most important contributions the evaluation and multiplication of some 30 varieties of grasses, including some kinds of guinea and a group of other grasses and legumes.

Carlos Arturo Gomez, 72, founder of the station and who emphasizes that there was formed as a worker and scientist, notes that today the center has a large body of researchers, of whom 26 are PhDs and 20 masters in specialty livestock.

For Odalys Perez Toral, deputy director of research, the most important challenge is precisely the Indian Hatuey introduce into all institutions of the country the technologies that have been generated here and that have been scientifically proven to be profitable and sustainable.

The specialist said that despite having worked in around 80 research projects, 50 percent is not implemented in productive entities.
