The return to the stage of the legend of Cuban ballet, Alicia Alonso added a touch of class to the 23rd edition of Havana’s International Ballet Festival.

With 90 years of age, accompanied by two of her former partenaires, Lazaro Carreño and Jorge Vega, the director of Cuba’s National Ballet Company (BNC) regaled the audience with Un retrato para el recuerdo, a piece that had not been announced to take dance lovers present at the theater by surprise, the www.cubadebate.cu Web site reported.

One again, Alonso was an exceptional actress, and inspired standing ovations throughout her presentation, since people couldn’t remain seated.

Stars Marta Garcia, Maria Elena Llorente, Orlando Salgado and Osmay Molina, already retired, also accompanied the prima ballerina assoluta on stage, and showed the class with which years ago they were capable of getting ovations from the audience at the same Grand Theater in this capital.

The gala, which included other ballets, was aimed at paying tribute to Cuban composer and pianist Ernesto Lecuona on the occasion of the centennial of the premiere of La comparsa, one of his works that better expresses the miscegenation characterizing the Caribbean island.
