The Christ of Havana, a monumental sculpture standing high on a hill in Havana’s Bay, again looks majestic after thorough restoration.
The 20-meter high white Carrara marble statue of Christ, made by late Cuban sculptor Jilma Madera, opened in 1958, weighs 320 tons, and is 12 meters shorter than the famous Corcovado Christ in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
During the renovation works engineers had to work hard on keeping the original structure and trying to leave the less possible impact on the original design in order to keep its style.
The Christ of Havana, which has a face that expresses serenity and self-confidence, is considered one of the biggest sculptures ever made by a woman and is visited by thousands of foreign tourists and Cubans every year.
