The authorities of Cuba have allowed the Roman Catholic Church to build a new cathedral in the city of Santiago de Cuba in the memory of Pope Benedict XVI’s visit to Cuba last year.
It is expected that the altar, on which the Pope performed a church service during his visit to Cuba, will be placed in the new cathedral.
In late January, Cuba’s authorities made a decision to return the building of a college and a chapel in the province of Granma, which were confiscated from the Roman Catholic Church after the Communist revolution in 1961, to the Church.
