The minister of foreign affairs of the Bahamas arrived in Havana to discuss bilateral issues at a time when Cuban exile activists in the United States accuse the Bahamian government of mistreating undocumented immigrants, most of whom are Cubans.

Frederick Mitchell arrived Thursday in Havana on a “working visit” together with Bahamas National Security Minister Marcelino Medina, according to official media.

“During the fraternal meeting, both authorities exchanged views on subjects of interest on the bilateral agenda and expressed satisfaction at the state of relations between Cuba and the Commonwealth of the Bahamas,” a brief note from the Cuban foreign ministry said.

Also at the meeting was the director of consular matters and attention to Cuban residents in the exterior, Rafael Dausa.

The information gave no further details of what the Bahamian delegation seeks to achieve in Cuba.

Mitchell’s visit to Havana coincides with protests by members of the Cuban exile in Miami who are trying to mobilize public opinion and to pressure Bahamian authorities to end the abuse that, they say, detained undocumented immigrants suffer in that country.

On Wednesday a caravan of dozens of vehicles drove through downtown Miami in protest, while two activists are on a hunger strike for the same reason.

The demonstration came after Bahamian authorities agreed, after meeting with U.S. Rep. Joe Garcia and several members of those exile groups, to prepare a document containing the points that the activists demand, but which has not yet been done. EFE
