Eight Fijian students who leave for Cuba on scholarships to study medicine were officially presented with return airfares, allowances and laptops by the Fijian Government.

Facilitated by the Public Service Commission and the Republic of Cuba, Minister for Youth and Sports, Viliame Naupoto said their recent achievement provides hope for a bright future in Fiji’s medical profession.

“Government is committed to having health system that is responsive to the needs of the people. That provides a fair service and one that has qualified personnel who can provide efficient, effective and professional care. To you students you will leave our shores largely as teenagers and return as young adults. My advice to you is to go forth, learn and explore your environment which in turn, will allow you all to contribute to improving the countries health care services.”

The students will leave at the end of the month.

Meanwhile, Inayah Kawthar Ali is the lone United World College scholarship recipient, who will go to Canada.

There are currently 14 students studying in Cuba in the medicine field.
