Cuba maintains a policy of zero tolerance of trade inpersons and other forms of sexual abuse, and guarantees the people’s human rights, highlighted in this capital Maria Esther Reus, Minister of Justice.
The Cuban minister presented on Tuesday the nation’s report on the legal confrontation of these crimes in 2012, based on laws that severely punish the perpetration of acts incompatible with the ethical values of society.
She stressed that the text responds to Cuba’s fulfillment of the main international instruments on this matter, which it has signed and ratified, and of respect to the principles proclaimed in the UN Charter.
The document informs that 241 persons were tried last year for the crime of procurement, 224 of which were convicted.
Reus pointed out that cases related to the abuse of minors are minimal and that most facts faced don’t qualify as trade in persons.
She emphasized that Cuba is not a country of origin, transit or destination of trade in persons, and nationals and foreigners are on equal terms in the eyes of the law, so there’s no differentiation at the time of judging or sentencing.
The minister added that the government devotes efforts and resources to prevention work, and emphasized that the island receives and offers information on this matter by way of international mechanisms established, and that it’s always opened to cooperation with other nations to fight this scourge.
